Food Coupons Suck

To Clip Or Not to Clip

I have to say that growing up I was raised shopping in traditional grocery stores and never really knew what a coupon was…call it what you may but it is what it is.  My mom might have clipped coupons before I was born but not at all since I was born.

Hitting personal financial issues because of poor decisions with my credit, it’s been hard at times to keep up the healthy lifestyle I want to live so desperately.  It’s sad that the healthy food is more expensive (SOMETIMES).  Crap food is cheaper because people have gotten so used to buying and consuming it that “is their vote” to companies to keep providing such crap food is mass quantities-driving the price down-simple economics really.

I started clipping food coupons a while back and got so excited about it for a brief moment-THANK GOD…because I woke up very quickly because 99% of most coupons are for processed CRAP food that will bring us to our death way to early.  To each their own but I have decided to venture out and find a better way to keep up a healthy life while saving tons of money at the same time…

What People Don’t Realize

I think it’s so easy to focus on the here and now, the future seems so far away for many…but if we slow down long enough to do several things we might begin to shift into awareness of what is really good and not so good for us.

1.  Consider where the food is from?  (what country)

2.  Consider if the food is processed or not?

3.  Consider if the food is naturally grown or genetically modified (and if you don’t know then that’s not a good sign)

4.  After eating any food take 5 minutes afterward to really communicate with you body to hear what it has to say. (sounds hokey to those who’ve never done this but you will notice things about your body and energy running through your body that will “tell you” if the food is good for you or not)

My last point here is that there is always a price to pay…We pay a high price for our freedom in the US, I think most would agree with me on that.  But we also pay a price for our health, we either pay now for healthy choices or we pay later for poor health and high medical bills.

Get Some Fleas

Yeah what exactly does that mean-”Get some Fleas???????????????????????

Well, instead of changing my families habits of eating healthy by using food coupons I’ve found several solutions that work out really well.

1.  Planning out meals ahead of time.

2.  Hitting up grocery stores that have meat reduced because the sell date is about to “expire” (all you do is buy that day at huge discount and either use that exact day or freeze for later use)

3.  Use Sam’s or Costco to buy in bulk.

4.  BUY FRESH FOOD at the Flea Market or Farmer’s Market-this is my favorite tip as of today.

Flea Market-I never would have thought nor wanted to go to the Flea Market all the time…my ego would say its “beneath me.”  But I can just share that the Flea Market is a great find and so inexpensive for wonderful fresh fruits and veggies.

Flea Market and this entire lot of FRESH food was only $21.00
(and it’s missing 2 bananas and 1 apple that got eaten on the way home).

Not For Everyone

This way of food shopping might not be for everyone but it’s proved to be a huge help in my household to make sure we are buying fresh, more natural foods, and saving money all at the same time.

I do continue to use random coupons for orange juice and some household goods…but for the most part I have the mindset that I’m willing to pay full price for my health today to live a long life tomorrow.

The one thing I would point out is that if there are things you know you're going to buy you can look to see if there are coupons for it. Organic whole wheat bread, Stonyfield farm yogurt, tissue paper, almond butter, granolas. That way if there are coupons you can usually print just those out.

Marybeth, good point for sure…u know I”m a sucker for some almond butter FOE SHOWWW! Point being though that 99.9% of the coupons in my local paper-SUCK and I get so frustrated when I see people I know so thrilled they spent $5 for nothing but boxed pizza, sugar filled cereal, potato chips, and you get the point…

Hey when you come down here can you bring Trader Joe's with you????????????????

I definitely agree. I have found coupons helpful for paper products, condiments, dog food, frozen veggies (cause you can't get farm fresh veggies here during the winter), and juices. We typically have our own meat, milk, and some canned veggies and jellies. I'm a little scared of store bought meat but I venture out of my little box occasionally and buy something.

I think the key to allowing the coupons to help you in a healthy life style is to keep an eye out for the organic coupons and paper product coupons. Mambo Sprouts is an awesome distributor of organic coupons.

This is an area in which I struggle when I teach couponing to other moms. I hate all the microwave meals, and other junk coupons that are out there but I don't want to push my own ideas on others. I just want them to think about how they can change their shopping habits to benefit their budget.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this today. It was something I've thought alot about lately.

Good thoughts again! I remember from being brought up in the mid 60's my Grandma being so well versed in the use of the 'coupon' (or as I can still hear her say QU–Pon…LOL!) that she could shop regularly and get 2 weeks of groceries for less than 5 Bucks,,,she was pro at it!

However as you say there do not seem to be any good qu–pons for those of us that want to eat correctly,,,perhaps we should try & start a 'coupon for good/raw foods movement',,,I did see (sad to say);-) a cart of 'koshie' (I believe it is all natural?) cereal marked down 50% cause nobody was buying it,,,at the marked down price of $2.50 a boax I STILL thought it was too expensive.

Yes I love the Local Farmers Markets in the 3-4 small towns around where I live I often go buy mass vegs. & for 2-3 days just eat lunches/dinners of cooked/raw veggies only….as you say when I do this & 'listen to my body' it says 'Yes,Yes Yes…I want More! ;-) ' & I feel more invigorated & alert! :-) ,,,LoL!
